Account For The Impact Of = Outside Temperature
The colder the outside temperature, t= he greater the chance that the flue gases will condense as the = vent ga= ses travel from the appliance to the termination cap. Obviously, if the B-= Vent is running up the outside of a structure, cold = = ambient temperature will cool the vent pipe easily = and dramatically.  But, even when= the B-Vent enters the attic area or exits through the roof, cold <= /b>= ambient= air begins to be a factor.

This will cause soot in the appliance.

Allow For Windy Conditions=
Winds can be strong and straight (whi= ch is ok) or they can be turbulent (which can be a problem= ).  Turbulent winds can be caused by = <= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:133%'>nearby = trees, structures, walls, etc.
The net effect of turbulence is to re= duce the up draft, or even create a downdraft.

Obey The Termination Table=
There are very specific rules for the termination of Type B gas vent.  They can be found in the manufacturer’s installation instructions, the GAMA Venting Tables, the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54), and more than likely = your local code.
Please turn to page 3 in the Venting Tables. Notice the Gas Vent Termination Table specif= ies the minimum height above the roof for different roof pitches. <= /span>

Inspect The Vent
The condition of the vent can effect = how = strong = the draft really is. On an existing vent = system,= you need to be certain that the vent is undamag= ed, is free of rust, is still assembled and in good working order. Another obvious item for inspection is the cap.  Is there a = bird= 217;s nest in it? Has it been crushed?

Maintain The Flue Gas Temperature
Prior to the late 80’s, Categor= y I appliance efficiencies were in the 60-65% range.  The flue gas temperature on <= /span><= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:117%'>one of = these appliances would have been 350 to 400 degrees <= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:117%'>at the outlet.
Then came the arrival of the 78-83% efficiency appliances.  <= /span><= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:117%'>The flu= e gas temperatures dropped to somewhere between <= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:117%'>266 deg= rees (the coolest allowable temperature for <= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";font-size:117%'>Categor= y I) and 330 degrees.  Now we have= to be concerned with maintaining as much heat as possible between= the appliance outlet and the termination.

Minimize Resistance
Resistance occurs when the movement of flue gases is slowed by offsets (such as 45’s, 60̵= 7;s, or 90’s); slowed by horizontal runs; slowed by <= /span>= termina= tions; and even slowed by the straight vertical vent itself (although that is very minimal). 
Solution:  Minimize the offsets and horizont= al = run.  When you absolutely must use offs= ets, = follow = the rules and reduce capacity accordingly.
